A word from Gaudi ...

“I know that the architects’ personal taste, which will succeed me, will influence in the Sagrada Familia works, but this doesn’t grieve me: I believe it will be beneficial for the Temple. It will mark the unit of time within the general plan unity. The temples have this advantage: given that their program is invariable, they may be conceived within the span of several centuries and their needs don’t change at all. And the new artists who will intervene in it, as time goes by, and even with new architectural styles, will give it more expression and monumental richness to the ensemble. The great temples have never been the work of a single architect.”

Antoni Gaudi

Last 3rd November 2003 was the 120th anniversary in which Gaudí took charge of the building works of the Sagrada Familia

Storm clouds threat the singular work by Gaudí: the restoration of the Colonia Güell Crypt creates turbulent passions among the defenders and the detractors of it.

As we advanced in our previous Gaudí News issue, the Crypt is in heating actuality in the world press. After the criticism coming from the villagers and the unfavourable reports of this restoration, the UNESCO questions the revision of the candidature of the Gaudí's works as a World Heritage.
At the same time, in Barcelona, pressures to force the rectification of the project by the architect responsible of the restoration, Antoni González are being made. Last Wednesday, 10th of December, a debate was convoked about “The Colonia Güell Crypt: between preserving and re-invention”

In http://www.gaudiclub.com/ingles/i_vida/cripta/llamamiento.asp you may also find the manifesto, which have signed more than 70 intellectuals and architects against that restoration. 7. GAUDINIAN NEWS: A NEW ASSOCIATION RELATED WITH GAUDÍ

The figure of Antoni Gaudí is amidst a beatifying process, thanks to the efforts of the Antoni Gaudí Pro-Beatifying Association. As we have already being informing, since last May 2003, his beatifying proceeding has been initiated in the Vatican.

The anxiety created by this affair has caused the creation of a new association, Truth and Justice, which is an active part in the beatifying process of diocesan priests and religious, martyrs in the Spanish Civil War.

Some of the architect's most reputed scholars are members of the entity: Antoni Oliva, biographer of Gaudí, Joan Bassegoda, curator of the Royal Gaudí Chair; Josep M. Garrut, the director of the Casa-Museo Gaudí in the Park Güell; Lluis Bonet, parish priest of the Sagrada Familia; and Josep M. Ainaud de Lasarte, historian; among others.

8. CURIOSITIES: 120th ANNIVERSARY OF GAUDÍ IN THE SAGRADA FAMILIA

The 3rd of November 1883 Gaudí assumed the leading of the Sagrada Familia Temple works. So that, 120 years ago it was started the building of what would later become the symbol of Barcelona.

Although Gaudí officially assumed the leading of the works the 28th March 1884, he had been working in them for a year, since the 3rd of November 1883. The first plans he officially signed, in December 1884, were the elevation and longitudinal section of the St. Joseph’s chapel –the central one in the ambulatory-. Its construction was very fast and it was inaugurated the 19th March 1885, being celebrated there the fist mass the following day.
