Rosario Monumental de Montserrat
Monumental Rosary of Montserrat is a collection of sculptures of religious symbols placed on the road leading from the Monastery of Montserrat to the Holy Cave where he found the image of the Virgin in 880. The road is carved into the mountain, along the massif of Montserrat, built between 1691 and 1704 under the patronage of Camporrell Gertrude, Marchioness of Tamarit. During his tour stood several groups of sculptures dedicated to the Rosary and the fifteen mysteries of the Virgin, built between 1896 and 1916. The work was funded with private donations, especially fraternities and Catholic institutions, thanks to the call by Jaume Collell i Bancells, canon of the cathedral of Vic, in the Jesuit magazine The Messenger of the Sacred Heart promoted a campaign to build Monumental Rosary. In its constructions architects Antoni Gaudí, Josep Puig i Villavecchia and Enric Sagnier, and sculptors like Josep Llimona or siblings Venanci and Agapit Vallmitjana were involved. For its diverse authorship, has no common stylistic stamp, but in general is part of the Catalan Modernism. In 1983 he had to redo the Second Mistery of Gozo, The Visitation, the new group of sculptures in bronze, was entrusted to Manuel Cusachs.
