Initiation Course to Antoni Gaudí


INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

The Gaudí & Barcelona Club promotes the realization of an initiation course to the architecture of Gaudí that shall be explained by the Art Historian Juan Morell Núñez.

The Course is composed of twelve lessons, comprising all the aspects of the work of Gaudí and the architect's personality.

CONTENTS OF THE COURSE

1st Lesson 1: Antoni Gaudí i Cornet (1852-1926)
  His birth: the polemics about his birthplace. His youth. The secondary school. His university studies.
   
2nd Lesson: The architecture of Gaudí
  The craftsmen and Gaudí - Gaudí the craftsman. His first works.
   

3rd Lesson: Eusebio Güell Bacigalupi: 40 years of friendship (1878-1918) (I)

  His life: Their fortuitous meeting, a decisive relationship for Gaudí. The Finca Güell: the Verdaguerian symbolism, the Garden of the Hesperides. A wild garden. The Güell Palace (1888). The Capricho at Comillas. The Garraf Cellar (1892).
   
4th Lesson: Works for Eusebio Güell (II)
  The Colonia Güell Church (1898, 1908-1915). The hanging model, a revolution in the architectural design.

The Park Güell (1900): Another wild or natural garden. Introduction to the site. Description. Its Iconography- A Delphic re-creation. The Can Artigas Garden in the Pobla de Lillet: a humid replica of the Park Güell in the Pyrenees (1905).

5th Lesson: Other works in Barcelona: The dwellings (I)
  The Vicens House (1886). The Calvet House (1898-1899). Bellesguard (1900). The Finca Miralles Gate and the "Crazy Gate"
   
6th Lesson: The dwellings (II)
  The Batlló House (1904-1906). The Milà House (1906-1911), A wholly modern building.
   
7th Lesson: The Sagrada Familia (1882-)
  José María Bocabella y Verdaguer. The spreading of the devotion to Saint Joseph, the patriarch of the Universal Church. The catholic workers movement. The Building Committee. The building of the Temple: Villar (1882-1883) and Gaudí (1883-1926). Its description and building history. The surpassing of gothic architecture. The deep religious symbolism. The decorative sculpture.
   
8th Lesson: Other religious works
  The Theresian College. Its symbolism. The Sacrament Chapel of Alella (1883). The Sant Pacià parish church in Barcelona. The first Glorious Mistery in the Monumental Rosary at Montserrat.
   
9th Lesson: The Cathedral of Mallorca (1903-1914)
  Pedro Campins y Barceló, bishop of Palma (1899-1915). Historical-architectural introduction to the cathedral. The liturgical restoration (1903-1914): the project, execution and interruption of the works. A descriptión of them: architecture, furniture, pictorical-ceramic decoration, the ironwork and stained glass windows.
   
10th Lesson: Works out of Catalonia
  The Episcopal Palace at Astorga (1886-1893). Juan Bautista Grau y Vallespinós (1832-1893). The developing of the project and the works. The death of the bishop and the resignation of Gaudí. The finishing of the palace. The Botines House in León (1892).
   
11th Lesson: Projects that were never carried out
  Projects on behalf of the Barcelona municipality: The street lamps, The Plaza Catalunya fountain, the public urinals. The reform of the Salón de Ciento in the Town Hall of Barcelona. The Franciscan Missions in Tangiers (1892). The Hotel Attraction in New York (1908). The chapel at Rancagua (Chile, 1922).
   
12th Lesson: The last years of Gaudí (1914-1926)
  His accident and death (7-10 of June, 1926). The collaborators of Gaudí: Berenguer (1866-1914), Jujol (1879-1949), Sugrañes (1879-1938), Martinell (1888-1973), Ràfols 1889-1965), Puig Boada (1891-1985), Bonet Garí (1893-1999), Bergós (1894-1974). The gaudinism. The Polemic about the finishing of the Sagrada Familia. The Beatificacion Process 1926-2002.


The course is composed of 12 lessons
A new lesson shall be delivered monthly to the participants. You can choose the language of lessons: english or spanish.
