The Consorci Museu d'Art Contemporani de Mataró (Barcelona), inaugurated the first exhibition of the Bassat collection of contemporary art at the Nau Gaudí in Mataró, with work from the period 1947-1969.

It consists of 79 works of art from 21 artists, the main body of which consists of three paintings by Pablo Ruiz Picasso: 'Home amb barretina' (1954), 'Ram de flors' (1962), and above all 'Mosquetaire assis' (1967). Works by Antoni Tàpies, Joan Miró, Albert Ràfols-Cassamada, Joan Vilacasas, Joan Ponç, Josep Maria Subirachs, Antoni Clavé and Josep Guinovart are also included, amongst others.

Bassat’s private collection will feed the future museum, the consortium for which was constituted in June, and consists of close to one thousand works of art, of which 825 have already been selected. This first selection represents 11 artists through 600 paintings, more than 150 drawings and some eighty sculptures.

This building was one of the first works of art designed by Antoni Gaudí in 1878, after qualifying as an architect. The building was a commission from the Cooperativa La Obrera Mataronesa, which used it as textile bleaching premises. It was here that the young Gaudí experimented for the first time with one of his great contributions, the parabolic arch.
